AI is changing customer service rapidly. But “using AI in customer service” can mean two very different things. Understanding the difference helps you make the right choice for your customers and your brand.
AI-driven: the bot talks to your customer
In an AI-driven model, a chatbot or voice bot handles customer conversations on its own. The customer types or speaks, the AI interprets the question, finds information and responds. A person only gets involved when the bot cannot cope, if at all.
Strengths: always available, fast for simple and repetitive questions, scalable.
Weaknesses: customers get stuck when their question does not fit the pattern; emotional or complex situations are handled poorly; and AI can produce answers that sound convincing but are wrong.
AI-assisted: the bot helps your team
In an AI-assisted model, AI works behind the scenes. It searches the knowledge base, summarises information and suggests an answer to the agent. The agent checks the suggestion, adapts it to the customer and sends it, or uses it during a phone call.
Strengths: faster and more consistent answers, shorter onboarding for new agents, and the empathy and judgement of a person in every conversation.
Weaknesses: it still requires people, so it is not the cheapest possible option on paper.
Why we choose AI-assisted
At Mijnsupportdesk we believe customer service is about trust. Customers want to feel heard, especially when something has gone wrong. That is why we use AI to make our agents better, not to replace them. Our approach has three layers:
- Knowledge: a structured knowledge base about your products, policies and procedures.
- AI assistance: an internal assistant that helps agents find the right information and formulate consistent answers.
- Human touch: a trained agent who stays responsible for every conversation.
This gives you the efficiency of AI without the frustration of a bot. Read more about AI-assisted customer service.
